Sustainability needs to be the guiding principle for Europe

Making the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) the basis for a long-term EU strategy for a sustainable Europe by 2030 was at the heart of the discussion with European Commission's Vice-President Jyrki Katainen during the June plenary session of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR). CoR members also adopted the opinion by Arnoldas Abramavičius (LT/EPP) focusing on the role of regions and cities in localising the SDGs.

Regional Innovation Scoreboard 2019: Nordic capital regions top the ranking, while innovation divide remains a concern

Helsinki-Uusimaa in Finland, Stockholm Region in Sweden and Copenhagen Region (Hovedstaden) in Denmark are the three most innovative regions in the EU, according to the European Commission's Regional Innovation Scoreboard 2019 published on Monday. The scoreboard shows that when it comes to innovation in EU regions, the good are catching up with the best but the gap to the most modest performers has grown.

Cities and regions set out vision to reform the European Union

Shortly before EU leaders are expected to adopt the "EU's Strategic Agenda" for the next five years, the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) set out its views on the future of the Europe. Entitled "Working together to bring the EU closer to its citizens", the document published by the Committee calls on Member States to radically change the way the EU works. The Committee argues that all EU decisions and policies must be anchored locally if it is to strengthen democracy and regain citizens' trust.
