EU Committee of Regions postpones March plenary session to contribute to preventing and controlling the Coronavirus pandemic

​Press statement by the President of the European Committee of the Regions, Apostolos Tzitzikostas.

"After careful deliberation, I have decided to postpone the European Committee of the Regions’ plenary session planned on 25-26 March, as a contribution to the efforts to prevent and control the further spread of the Coronavirus pandemic. This course of action reflects measures already put in place by many local, regional, national and EU authorities. This decision has already been communicated to all of our Committee’s Members, to the staff and to the other EU institutions and partners, with whom we are in close contact.

EU Climate Law: Cities and regions demand 5-year action plan

The President of the European Committee of the Regions has called on the EU to set out a 5-year action plan to ensure all regions and cities are supported in achieving climate neutrality. President Apostolos Tzitzikostas said that monitoring, investment and support in the short-term at regional level were necessary to ensure Europe is on track to deliver its Climate Law, just unveiled by the European Commission, which would legally commit the EU to being climate-neutral by 2050.

Social Europe and demographic change, high priorities for SEDEC in 2020

​​​The European Committee of the Regions' SEDEC commission began its new term of office with a discussion on the European Commission's initiatives for strengthening the social dimension of the European Union. At the meeting on 24 February, members also adopted an opinion which urges to tackle demographic challenges at all levels of government and across EU policies. These two topics are among the top priorities in the SEDEC  2020 work programme.

The European Green Deal frames cities and regions' new priorities

On 27 February, the mayor of Seville Juan Espadas (ES/PES) chaired its first meeting as president of the Commission for the Environment, Climate Change and Energy (ENVE) of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR). The European Green Deal is the top priority for this new mandate. Upcoming ENVE opinions include water, clean air, hydrogen and biodiversity. New rapporteurs have been appointed for the 'European Climate Law', the 'Climate Pact' and the 'New Circular Economy Action Plan'.
